For those living nearby, Jihad al-Shamie seemed to lead a relatively normal existence: a new father who exercised with dumbbells and frequently blocked parking spaces outside the residence he resided alongside his parents.

The son of an emergency surgeon, Shamie seemed to have a positive upbringing, with siblings who were younger who later pursued promising professions in IT and pharmaceutical sciences.

But since he was shot dead after carrying out a lethal assault targeting Jewish worshippers, a fuller picture has come to light. Investigators found that Shamie was already a bankrupt, convicted low-level criminal and an alleged rapist when he attacked worshippers celebrating the religious holiday.

Conventional Upbringing

Jihad al-Shamie seemed to experience a conventional upbringing in Manchester during the nineties. In home videos created for his family member abroad, he holds a feline in the family garden, telling his father he hopes to provide nourishment; in another he helps his sibling on a swing on the lawn.

Shamie shared his childhood with siblings following him, the relatives going on trips to Camelot theme park, Chester zoo and the Trafford Centre, and the children participated in school nativity plays during the festive season.

In their previous residence, across from the medical facility where Shamie’s parent was employed, local residents recalled a “typical young child” who was member of a “respectable home”.

He would interact positively with peers on the neighborhood, and the single odd behavior a neighbor mentioned was that he passed much of his time engaging with electronic entertainment – so much that it resulted in visual strain.

“The family seemed fine, the parent was employed across the street, he appeared pleasant enough, always spoke to me. They were just a nice family, the mom often talked with neighbors. The boy would play games, he would spend entire days playing, he had a noticeable blinking habit.”

‘An Ordinary Lad’

Those residing near his home in Prestwich characterized him as a “straightforward, ordinary lad” who would regularly train in his front garden, using exercise equipment, with someone noting he often parked inconveniently in front of her home.

The relatives apparently transferred to the attached residence, about two miles from the scene of the attack, about 15 years ago, when Shamie was approaching his second decade. During the siblings' childhood, the relatives made their home in the neighboring district.

Child of a Medical Specialist

The parent, Faraj al-Shamie, journeyed internationally as a emergency physician, practicing in dangerous regions across the globe, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He had employment with non-profits, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, and trained with the eminent surgeon David Nott in the Mosul municipality within Iraq.

Household's Position

Faraj al-Shamie has dissociated the household from his offspring's assault, publishing a message through social media that expressed: “Information coming from the Manchester area concerning the violent incident directed against a Hebrew temple has been a profound shock to us.

“The household members locally and overseas vehemently denounces this horrific action, which affected unarmed, ordinary people. We entirely dissociate our family from this assault and communicate our intense surprise and sadness concerning the incident. We extend our sympathy to those affected and their relatives, and we wish them fortitude and solace.”

Personal Life

Shamie had previously worked as a tutor, providing lessons in English and programming. However, he was listed as unemployed in government insolvency records which indicated he applied for debt management last September while residing with his parents. Just one month later, his dad uploaded an image of him with a newborn, describing the photo “Wonderful New Grandchild”.

Previous Legal Issues

It was revealed that Shamie was under investigation for sexual assault when he steered his modest automobile into religious attendees at the temple. It is not known when the supposed assault occurred but it is understood to have been this year. He was subject to ongoing scrutiny by local law enforcement.

He had faced legal issues previously, based on reports, who mentioned his previous convictions for other less-serious offences. He was nevertheless not monitored by counter-terror police or intelligence agencies before the incident.

Ideological Shift

In the hours since the attack, authorities have been examining all aspects of his background to understand who, or what, delivered him on the path to terror. This involves reviewing communication data, verifying contacts and acquaintances, and reviewing his digital footprint.

He seemed to have been obsessed on the plight of Muslims in certain Middle Eastern regions, especially lately regarding Gaza. An online presence, suspected as his personal account has a weapon as its display photo, alongside a white flower, and seemingly a holy text.

A solitary message on the dormant X account references the bombing of Manbij in Syria in 2016, and calls on God to “stand up against people who injured and slain them.”
